ITP Quarterly Letter
- Greetings and welcome to the Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) Web site. One of the very first resolutions of our newly formed Board of Directors is to write a letter to our website visitors approximately every quarter. We want to keep you up to date on the growth and development of our practice.

Ongoing Class
- A class in Leonard Energy Training (LET) is being taught by George Leonard and associates every Thursday between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Aikido of Tamalpais, 76 East Blithedale Ave, Mill Valley, California.
LET is a discipline inspired by the sophisticated martial art of aikido, along with Western psychology and physical theory. The fee for each class is $10. For further information, phone 415-383-9474.
The Samurai Game®
- The Samurai Game® is a psychologically intense simulation game, created by George Leonard, during which participants have a chance to step into an unfamiliar form of governance and consciousness. From this vantage point, they are offered the possibility of seeing their habitual behaviors with crystal clarity and, if they wish, begin to change them.

Stanford University Study of Integral Transformative Practice
- At long last, results from the
Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention have
come in. The Center carried on a three-year study of ITP, one year each for three
groups of seniors, most of them in their early of mid-sixties. The first two groups
included men and women who were interested simply in improving their health and
well-being; the third group was comprised of people diagnosed with atrial fibrillation
(irregular heartbeats). Members of each of the groups met once a week under the
guidance of a psychologist trained in the methods of Integral Transformative Practice.
The weekly meetings included performing the ITP Kata, group sharing, a lecture on
some aspect of health, and instruction in the development and use of ITP-type
affirmations--all of which are included in The Life We Are Given by George Leonard
and Michael Murphy. At the beginning and end of the year of practice, the participants
were assessed for improvements in quality of life, emotional well-being, cognitive
functioning, and physical health.
All three groups showed improvement in some aspects of their functioning. The most
dramatic results came in the area of cognition. With one year's practice, according to
Frederick Luskin, Ph. D., director of the study, the participants demonstrated
measurable gains in reaction time, short- and long-term memory, reasoning ability, and
global cognitive processing. This finding is particularly noteworthy, since people of
sixty or older tend to show losses in these areas over a one-year period. As for the
physiological aspects of the study, all three groups showed significant decreases in
systolic blood pressure, along with increases in both upper and lower body strength.
There were no statistically significant changes in flexibility and balance.
Another surprising finding came in the area of psychological and spiritual well-being.
Significant improvements were reported by participants in the degree of social support
they provided for other people in the ITP group. Previous studies have examined the
impact of programs to increase the social support participants perceive from other
people, but few have demonstrated that a mind-body-spirit program can increase social
support directed to other people. Furthermore, participants reported significant
increases in spiritual well-being over the course of the year's practice.
Thus far, according to an official in the study, "we can conclude that the ITP program
was well received and beneficial in a sample of community-dwelling older adults and
patients with atrial fibrillation, and that the results that were observed in the Aikido of
Tamalpais site [where the 1992-93 trainings were held] were not idiosyncratic to that
milieu--i.e., ITP can be effective for a broader range of people in the community."
